We had a rusty old chain link fence and gate between our house and the neighbor’s that was handy for keeping friend’s dogs and young children in, but did little else except define an area. Aesthetically pleasing? Hardly. Our friend Gail made a concept drawing of some gates for our backyard, and we were thrilled with it.
I helped with cutting metal, grinding and some welding. Gail did the bending, shaping, placing and more welding. Together we completed the project in about a week, working my kind of hours ( 9:00 until lunch). Yesterday I installed the gates, using cedar posts for support.
Needless to say, the thrill we felt upon first seeing Gail’s design has been greatly superseded by the gates themselves. We think they are a stunning addition to our backyard patio.

The gates are stunning!
They are so beautiful. I just can’t imagine what could be next for the garden.
You should post before and after’s. (Like really before… Before the gate, the window, the patio, the new doors and the garden itself!!)
Thanks for your comment Dayna, I was thinking of taking pictures during the process but kept forgetting my camera and just having too much fun. I’ll see if I have any old pics of the old gate and fence. I put the old gate on the other side of the house, but it now has to go as my other neighbor wants to put a new gate up at the rear of her house. I’ll have to see what I can work out with her since it is about the same 8 feet between our houses.
I love the design. The sun adds an asymmetry that is very appealing. How tall are the gates? They appear to be about 5′.
The gates are 5’6″ at their tallest point. Being a few inches off the ground they are almost as tall as I am. I think the proportions are right for the space. Gail did a great job with the design.
